Timeline Leading to the Augsburg Confession (1517-1530)
- October 31, 1517: Martin Luther posts the 95 Theses on the castle church door in Wittenberg
- 1518-1519: Luther's debates with Catholic theologians, including Johann Eck at Leipzig
- January 1521: Luther excommunicated by Pope Leo X
- April-May 1521: Luther appears at the Diet of Worms, refuses to recant
- 1522: Luther returns from the Wartburg Castle, where he translated the New Testament into German
- 1524-1525: Peasants' War challenges both religious and social order
- 1529: The term "Protestant" emerges at the Diet of Speyer when reforming princes protest against the Edict of Worms
- April 1530: Emperor Charles V calls for the Diet of Augsburg to address religious divisions
